Resumen:
Regional crops play a vital role in the Argentinean rural economy due to their function as mobilizers of local economies, generating not only sustainable economic benefits, but also work sources. Besides, they offer the possibility of food self-sufficiency to medium and small holders; or the provision of raw materials for food or biofuel industries. The aim of this symposium is to analyze the state of art on physiological studies conducted with some tropical or subtropical species of regional importance in Latin America, such as cassava (Manihot esculenta), yerba mate (Ilex paraguariensis), sugarcane (Saccharum officinarum) and quinoa (Chenopodium quinoa). The study of physiological or ecophysiological characteristics will be revised, in order to increase yield and quality of these crop species, or to attend breeding programs. The development of procedures that make possible the researchers approach will be also analyzed.
