Resumen:
The genus Saccharum L., in the broad sense including the species of Erianthus Michx., comprises 35-40 species from tropics and subtropics of the world. Three native species of Saccharum occur in Brazil, in addition to sugarcane (S. officinarum L.) that is cultivated and is economically important. However, the circumscription of the native species is confusing; specimens occur with intermediate morphology between S. angustifolium (Nees) Trin. and S. villosum Steud. (S. aff. villosum). In order to better define the taxonomic circumscription of these taxa, molecular cloning of five regions of four low-copy nuclear loci was performed: Aberrant panicle organization1 (apo1), Dwarf8 (d8), two exons of Erect panicle2 (ep2-ex7 and ep2-ex8), and Retarded palea1 (rep1). The molecular analysis showed that all taxa belonging to this species complex are polyploid and S. angustifolium, S. villosum, and S. asperum (Nees) Steud. are distinct taxa. The plants with intermediate morphology (S. aff. villosum) have a complex evolutionary history and are probably the result of hybridization events. The use of more molecular markers, as well as cytogenetic analysis, may confirm whether these plants are actually natural hybrids between S. angustifolium and S. villosum. (CNPq, Capes).
