Resumen:
The American genus Galianthe (Rubiaceae-Spermacoceae) consists of 49 species, distributed in two subgenera: subgen. Galianthe (South America) and subgen. The main concentration and diversification centres are in Brazil, in the central and meridional planalto (28 species, 16 of which are endemic) and in central, northern and eastern Paraguay (16 species, seven of which are endemic). Galianthe species are shmbs or sub-shrubs, mostly with a xylopodium. They have heterostylous flowers in thyrsoid or cymoid inflorescences and capsular fmits with dehiscent or indehiscent mericarps. The pollen grains are 7-8-colporate and possess a complex sexine ornamentation pattern, consisting of a suprareticulum and infiareticulum. The chromosome base number is x = 8, 12, 14, 15, with 8 being the lowest number within the tribe Spermacoceae. Representatives of Galianthe occur in fields, or rarely inside forests, fiom the lowlands up to 3000 m. This study consists of a taxonomic revision of the genus Galianthe. In total, 21 new taxa are described, 16 new combinations are made, new synonyms are established and known geographical areas are expanded. Furthermore, an analysis of exo-morphological, vegetative and reproductive characters, leaf and stem anatomy is executed. Also, an overview of pollen morphology and chromosome numbers is given for al1 species.species are shmbs or sub-shrubs, mostly with a xylopodium.
