Resumen:
A taxonomic revision of the genus Schizachyrium Nees in South America has been made. As a result of this study 22 taxa are recognized, distributing from Colombia and Venezuela to Río Negro province in Argentina. Revalidation the identity of taxones previously including in the synonymy: S. bimucronatum Roseng., B.R. Arrill. & Izag., S. lactiflorum (Hack.) Herter, S. plumigerum (Ekman) Blake. Three new combinations are presented: S. elongatum (Hack.) Peichoto, S. salzmannii (Trin. ex Steud) Nash var. aristatus (Hack.) Peichoto y S. tenerum var. hirtiglumis (Henrard) Peichoto. The area of distribution the S. spicatum is extended in Argentina and is recorded for the first time for Chile. S. hatschbachii Peichoto is mentioned for the first time from Paraguay and S. semitectum (Swallen) Reeder from South American. A dichotomic key for recognizing species and varietes is given, as well as a description, illustrations, geographical distribution, ecological observations and vernacular names for each species are provided.
