Abstract The reproductivebiologyof13SouthAmericantaxaof Bothriochloa was studied.Allsurveyedspeciesreproduce sexuallyandareself-compatible.Severalelementsalsopointtoself-pollinationastheirmainbreedingsystem:(i)bud pollination that occursinmostspeciesenhancingcleistogamy, (ii) presenceofpitsintheglumesthatimpede the openingofflowersand(iii)reductioninthenumberofstamens,atrendassociatedwithoutbreeding. r 2009 ElsevierGmbH.Allrightsreserved.
