Resumen:
Ordered mesoporous alumina (MA) was synthetized by the evaporation-induced self-assembly method and tested for the ozonation of sulfamethoxazole (SMX, 20 mg/L). Single ozonation without alumina, at different initial pH, achieved fast and complete SMX removal and mineralized up to 35% of SMX (pH = 7). The addition of MA did not affect the SMX removal rate; however, the solid material attained a remarkable TOC removal of 80%. Adsorption and catalytic potential of MA were assessed in different tests. For these experiments, MA behaved as a strong adsorbent at both acidic and neutral pH values, without registering catalytic effect. Furthermore, after four successive reutilization cycles, MA reduced its adsorption performance due to chemisorption of reaction intermediaries. Nevertheless, the used material was partially regenerated by direct gas-phase ozonation.
