Resumen:
The integration of constructed wetlands and the concept of Microbial Electrochemical technologies gave rise to iMETland, an eco-friendly device which purifies urban wastewater from small communities with minimal area requirement compared to conventional treatments and at zero-energy cost. By using an innovative electro-conductive material on constructed wetlands, that allows the growth of electroactive bacteria and boosts the microbial interactions on the treatment system, depuration rates 5 to 10-fold higher than those of classical technologies are achieved, lowering area requirements and construction costs. Full-scale validation of the device is being carried out in four different locations around the globe. In this work the progress of the project and the performance of the device on the location in South America (Mar del Plata, Argentina) will be shown.
