This paper deals with the prediction of high-cycle fatigue behavior in metallic materials when short cracks are involved, by using a fracture mechanics threshold curve concept. Simple expressions to estimate the fatigue crack propagation rate of long and short cracks as a function of the applied stress intensity factor range and the threshold for fatigue crack propagation are analyzed and compared. Experimental results taken from literature are analyzed and estimations of short crack propagation behavior are presented and discussed.
