Resumen:
The main goal of the present work was to obtain PLA/plasticizer (TBL) blends with improved properties than the pure polymer and evaluate its thermal stability and barrier properties. Also, the compatibility between TBL and PLA was studied.DSC curves showed a single Tg for all the blends, indicating the miscibility between PLA and TBL. A reduction in Tg and Tm was observed with the addition of TBL to the polymer. These changes were due to the increase in the polymer chain mobility, indicating a plasticization effect. Thermal degradation stability of PLA was not appreciably changed with the addition of TBL. On the other hand, water vapor permeation (WVP) values of the PLA films slightly increased with the TBL content, but still demonstrated acceptable values. Notwithstanding the incorporation of the additive enhanced the crystallinity of the films, as mentioned above, the increased in the free volume and chain mobility of the amorphous face, led to a WVP increase. This effect would make the structure less dense and allow water and other molecules to diffuse through the matrix.
