Resumen:
The tetrahedrane C4H4 isomer is highly reactive and the most strained cage compound known, while the coupling of two tetrahedrane molecules together has been theoretically predicted to yield the shortest known non-cyclic carbon bond in a saturated hydrocarbon system. The steric strain in this sort of compounds represents a real challenge for organic chemist during the design of new saturated hydrocarbons and their derivatives with unusual bonding properties. Also, it is considered of interest the effect of the attached functional groups on the carbon single bonds. Present review aims to revise with certain degree of details the research of last decades searching for theoretical studies devoted to the source of bond shortening in cage-cage systems, with special emphasis on carbon single bonds involving tetra-coordinated atoms.
