Resumen:
1. Abstract  Lipid oxidation of polyunsaturated fatty acids (PUFAs) leads to the formation of lipid hydroperoxides (LOOHs) as the primary products. LOOHs are one type of reactive oxygen species (ROS) whose biological function is not yet clearly understood. This article provides current information on the origin and function of polyunsaturated fatty acids in nature, lipid peroxidation of cellular membranes linked with fatty acid hydroperoxide formation, decomposition and effects on biological systems. A further focus is placed on analytical methods for studying fatty acid hydroperoxides in membranes with emphasis in chemiluminescence, its origin and the effect of antioxidants.
