Resumen:
In many regions of Latin America arsenic is a common pollutant, present in high concentrations in several natural water sources. Since arsenic is toxic, its chronic exposure can cause different pathologies. The zero valent iron technique (ZVI) can be used for arsenic removal from drinking waters. The objective of the present work has been to characterize the variables that affect Fe(III) production, closely related with the removal mechanism, using different commercially available sources of metallic iron. Our studies show that the contact surface of Fe0, the dissolved oxygen concentration and the presence of salts in the drinking water are among the most important variables that control the initial heterogeneous process of electrochemical corrosion.
