Resumen:
The species diversity and seasonal abundance of Culicoides (Diptera: Ceratopogonidae) were studied in northwestern Argentina between 2003 and 2005. This region is known by the filariasis disease that is caused by Mansonella ozzardi. Culicoides were collected in three areas located in the rainforest mountainous area. A total of 8271 specimens were collected by CDC light traps. The most common species were Culicoides paraensis and C. insignis. Culicoides lahillei, Culicoides venezuelensis, Culicoides debilipalpis and Culicoides crescentis were also collected. C. paraensis was abundant during the summer, and C. insignis and C. lahillei during the end of the summer and during the autumn. The accumulated rainfall was the climatic variable more related with the fluctuation of C. paraensis.
