Resumen:
The wetlands play a relevant role in the coastal systems as their physical and ecological functions, biodiversity, and resources for humankind. In Punta Indio, Buenos Aires, the intertidal wetlands, which developed parallel to the embankment of the Rio de La Plata, show evidence of recent significant reduction in the areal extent. This study is aimed to detect where erosion is seriously affecting the wetland environment and to identify the causes of this process. An analysis of the coastline dynamics and land use changes has been performed by comparing multi-temporal series of aerial photographs and satellite images. Result point outs a significant correlation between the coastline retreats and sectors where recent human interventions, generally associated to wetland vegetation cutting, have been done, i.e. urban development and construction of beaches. This study provides some suitable information to the model for the sustainable land use and for the preservation of the wetland environments.
