ABSTRACT At the Southeastern part of the Frontal Cordillera of Mendoza Province, a folded sedimentary unit known as the Las Lagunitas Formation, crops out. The main outcrops of the unit were extended in between the Diamante River to the South and Tunuyan towards de North. The section of this unit assigned to Devonian, was studied at the Cortaderas Creek located at 34º 23’ S. It comprises a marine siliciclastic sequence which towards east and west is covered by Permian-Triassic volcaniclastic rocks of the Choiyoi Group. The beds of this unit show a highly compressed folding with axial planes dipping mainly to the east (west vergence), and it is partially affected by very low grade metamorphism. To the upper part of the sequence, the sandstones show several intercalations of laminated black shales bearing regularly preserved graptolite faunas. The systematic study of this fossil association suggests a Climacograptus bicornis Biozone assigned to the Upper Ordovician (Caradoc). However, the time span of the Las Lagunitas Formation could be much longer. The finding of the Caradoc fossiliferous sequence towards the south of the Cordillera Frontal (Mendoza Province) in the ‘Chilenia’ terrane gives a new tectonic insight and has implications regarding the evolution of the Ordovician sedimentary basins of western Argentina.
