Resumen:
The hydration reactions of a-pinene to produce alcohols by using catalysts prepared by treating clays with monochloroacetic acid were studied. The catalysts were characterized by X-ray diffraction, differential thermal analysis, temperature programmed desorption of adsorbed pyridine, and infrared analysis of adsorbed pyridine to determine Brönsted and Lewis sites. Catalytic measurements indicated that acid treated clay improved the catalytic activity and selectivity to oxygenated products, due to an increase of the acidity of the catalyst. The selectivity for compound oxygenates increases with increasing of a-pinene conversion because of increased contact between the water molecules with a-pinene remnants. Untreated clay produced a-pinene isomerization compuonds, while treated clays also produced alcohols and other products. With the time, the produced alcohol was converted into other products.
