Resumen:
In view of the stringent environmental regulations, an environmental eco-friendly leaching process was study for the recovery of cobalt from the active materials of spent Li-ion batteries of notebooks. The experiments were carried out varying the time of leaching using a bio-generated sulfuric acid. The higher dissolution of metals were observed at 120 min. Cobalt was precipitated from the leachate liquor in the form of cobalt oxalate by adding oxalic acid, and then calcined at 500 oC. The characterization by XRD, SEM and FTIR reveal the presence of Co3O4 in the recuperated oxide. The catalytic performance of the oxide was studied in the complete oxidation of toluene in air. Complete conversion occurs at 300 oC. The results show that cobalt oxides obtained using spent Li-ion batteries as raw materials, have an interesting performance as catalysts for elimination of VOCs.
