V-doped TiO2 materials (0.01, 0.05 and 0.10 nominal atomic %) were synthesized by the sol-gel method and characterized by XRD. Their performance as photocatalysts was studied by the degradation of phenol, 4-nitrophenol and 4-chlorophenol with UV lamps. It was found that the materials prepared using VO(acac)2 as vanadium precursor had better efficiency than those prepared from NH4VO3. The optimum content was 0.01 nominal atomic %. No improvement was seen in the efficiency of phenol degradation by increasing the calcination temperature. The best photocatalyst was prepared from VO(acac)2, with vanadium content of 0.01 nominal atomic %, calcining at 400° C without airstream (0.01VTi-400): total degradation of phenol (50μM) in 3 hours by irradiation with UV lamps. To evaluate the efficiency of this catalyst in the degradation of other structurally related compounds, two substituted phenols were selected: 4-chlorophenol and 4-nitrophenol. The 0.01VTi-400 photocatalyst showed to be applicable to the degradation of phenolic compounds when the substituent is an activating groups or a weakly deactivating group (for electrophilic reactions).
