Pt/SiO2 and PtSn/SiO2 catalysts have been used for comparison purposes. Whereas PtSn/SiO2 catalyst showed an important improvement in the conversion of furfuraldehyde, a considerable decrease in conversion was obtained with PtSn/TiO2 catalyst. Extended X-ray Absorption Fine Structure (EXAFS) and X-ray Absorption Near Edge Structure (XANES) results obtained for Pt/TiO2 and PtSn/TiO2, catalysts indicate a strong interaction of Pt with the support. The combined effects of the decoration of metallic particles by partially reduced titania and the possibility of an interaction between the support and different tin species that could affect the platinum performance are suggested as being responsible of the behaviour of TiO2 supported catalysts.
