Resumen:
The liquid phase hydrogenation of furfural is studied, employing silica supported platinum catalysts, modified by tin. Tin is introduced by means of Surface Organometallic Chemistry on Metals (SOMC/M) techniques, giving rise to the so called PtSn-OM and PtSn-BM systems. Using mild reaction conditions (10 bar H2 and 373 K), the monometallic catalyst Pt/SiO2 was not very active. PtSn-BM and PtSn-OM catalysts allowed to obtain furfuryl alcohol with high selectivity and a good activity. These results are explained by means of the promote effect of ionic Sn and the dilution of platinum metallic sites, favoring the adsorption and activation of the furfural molecule through the C=O group. In PtSn-OM catalyst, the presence of SnBux fragments on the surface, generates a beneficial steric effect. In PtSnBM catalysts, the reaction showed a zerothorder dependence with respect to furfuraldehyde. The hydrogen concentration dependence was 0.65 order.
