The volatile organic compounds (VOCs) are defined, according to USEPA, as those organic compounds that at 20 °C present a vapour pressure equal or higher than 0.01 KPa. This defines about 200 chemical compounds such alcohols, chlorinated hydrocarbons, esters, etc. excluding CH4. The European Union defines VOCs as any organic compounds that has a starting boiling point lower or equal to 250 ºC measured in standard atmospheric pressure (101.3 kPa). VOCs are harmful due to different factors; on the hand they form part of the photochemical smog and some of them participate in the greenhouse effect and the other, some of them are cancerous or teratogenics. VOCs sources are classified in biogenic, created by nature, and anthropogenic mainly linked to transport and use of solvents. The control of VOCs can be divided in two groups: primary, which is related to technological substitution and secondary, which are related to the elimination at the end of pipe. The last technologies are also classified in recovery methods (adsorption, condensation, membranes) and destruction methods (biofiltration, thermal and catalytic oxidation).
