AbstractThis workreportsasimplesynthesisofamesoporousorderedsilicastructure(MCM-41)grownuparoundpre-synthesizedmaghemitenanoparticles. Acompositewithmagneticresponseandhighspecific surfaceareawasobtainedaddingmaghemitenanoparticlescoatedwitholeicacid inthesynthesisgelofMCM-41and finally calcininginair.Differentcharacterizationstechniquessuchasmagneticmeasurements,Mössbauer spectroscopyat25and 260 1C andtransmissionelectronmicroscopywereusedtostudythemagneticandstructuralchangesoftheinitial maghemitenanoparticlesproducedduringitscoveragewiththemesoporoussilicastructure.Thepresenceofthemesoporousstructureinhibits theexpectedtransformationfrommaghemitetohematitewhenthesystemwascalcinedinairat510 1C. Itwasestablishedthatasinteringof thenanoparticlesduringthecalcinationstepoccurs,leadingtoamagnetizationsaturationvaluesimilartothatofthebulkcompound.Inorderto evaluatethecapabilityasadsorbent,themagneticcompositewassubjectedtoasurfaceamino-functionalizationandthentestedforCr(VI)andCu(II) adsorptionfromwater
