Peniculuscurrently includes 8 species. These species are usually morphologicallydifferentiated by the cephalothorax, neck, trunk and abdomen shape; however, these characters show high polymorphism and therefore the delimitation at levelspecies of this genus is difficult using only this type of data. The geneticdistances of 25 Peniculusspecimens associate to ninemarine fish species in Antofagasta Bay, Chile, was calculated from sequences of DNA barcoding marker (COImt) (678 base pairs). The genetic distance among the specimens from thedifferent host species was 0.10%. We analysed the barcoding gene fragment using Bayesian Inference (BI) forphylogenetic reconstruction (usingthree outgroups). Based on the phylogenetic analysis, an ultrametric tree was built anda general mixed Yule-coalescent (bGMYC) model for species delimitation wasconducted. Results show based on morphology the individuals collected in thisstudy can be assigned to Peniculuscf. fistula. However, the high polymorphism morphologic is not support bygenetic variation, observed intothe lineage of Peniculus associate to several host species ofmarine fishes, this can be interpret as speciationincipient pattern. Similar results were obtained for Trifur tortuosus parasites on Chilean marine fishes. Therefore, themolecular analysis for Peniculusspecies, especially for European Peniculusfistula is needed.
