Resumen:
Representatives of Reithrodon are among the most beautifuland widespread sigmodontine rodents of the openlandsin the South American Southern Cone. Withtworecognizedliving species (R.auritusand R.typicus)but atleast10 nominal forms in current synonymy,Reithrodonoccursin crop fields,grasslands, steppes, and semidesertsofArgentina, Chile, Uruguay,and adjoining southernmostBrazil (Musser and Carleton 2005). It is the mostfrequentlyencountered genus in the sigmodontine fossilrecordof Argentina, and several names have been usedtodescribe Plio- Pleistoceneremains (Reig 1978; Pardiñas1995b).
