Resumen:
Aims To test attitudes of health care team members (HCTM) and people with diabetes in Argentina regarding the characteristics/impact of type 2 diabetes. Methods The third version of the Diabetes Attitudes Scale questionnaire was randomly and personally distributed and collected in different provinces among 252 HCTM (physicians, nurses, nutritionists and social workers) and 279 people with type 1 and type 2 diabetes. Results Comparable data were recorded from different HCTM, but those working in the Public Health Sector had lower scores than those from private organizations (P < 0.02). No significant differences were recorded between people with type 1 or type 2 diabetes, but people who had previously attended diabetes education courses obtained higher scores regarding “Seriousness of the disease” (P < 0.01). There were significant differences between the two populations at the level of Need for special training, Seriousness of type 2 diabetes, Patient autonomy, Value of tight control and Psychosocial impact of diabetes. Conclusions The unfavorable trend among the participants could contribute to the poor treatment outcomes of people with type 2 diabetes. Removal of these attitudes through education could contribute to improve quality of care and of life of people with diabetes, decreasing the costs of the disease.
