Background/Aims: Although Islet Neogenesis-Associated Protein (INGAP) is involved in the control of β-cell mass and function in adult animals, its possible role during embryogenesis is unknown. Thus, we studied the chronology of appearance of INGAP-positive cells during the fetal period and the changes of their mass in relation with those of β-cell mass and function. Methods: We studied normal Wistar rat fetuses at 11 (E11), 17 (E17) and 19 (E19) days of gestation and 7-day-old newborn (P7) rats. We measured body (BW) and pancreas (PW) weight, glycemia (G), glucose-induced insulin secretion (GIIS) and several morphologic parameters. Results: BW, PW, G and GIIS increased significantly (P
