Resumen:
To close the gap between the current scientific knowledge and its application in daily clinical practice and to improve the care provided to people with diabetes, IDF implemented the Building Research in Diabetes Global Environments and Systems (BRIDGES) programme. BRIDGES promotes translational research supported by an Eli Lilly unrestricted USD 10.000.000 grant. BRIDGES has an Executive Committee chaired by Prof. Linda Siminerio (USA) and a Review Committee chaired by Prof. Juan José Gagliardino (Argentina), with 12 expert reviewers from all IDF Regions. BRIDGES provides funding for short- (2 years; US$65,000) and long- (3 years; US$400,000) term projects; so far it has supported 14 short- and 13 long-term projects, representing IDF active presence in its regions. BRIDGES has also organized/supported 10 workshops worldwide to develop/improve young scientist capacity to develop research proposals. To reduce diabetes epidemics through primary prevention in developing countries, BRIDGES launched the Diabetes Supporting TrAnslational Research and Twinning (D-START) programme. This initiative will provide IDF with an effective tool to establish/strengthen the relationship leader/new researchers, to increase the critical mass of researchers in developing countries, and establish effective partnership with local health authorities officially involved in project development, thus assuring long-term sustainability. Pakistan and Vietnam have been selected for the first two USD 250.000 D-START grants, supervised by an international expert board. IDF and BRIDGES will start a new initiative: the Demonstration Studies, cooperatively prepared by IDF Task Force Groups, to promote: a) sustainable improvement in quality of care for people with diabetes, b) active partnership among IDF, national health authorities and researchers (international leaders and local research teams). This approach will strengthen IDF interaction with health systems, particularly in developing countries, and contribute to a better access to appropriate care by people with diabetes. It will also ensure IDF participation into the NCD Alliance objectives.
