Resumen:
Objective. To test diabetes-related attitudes of health care team members (HCTMs) and people with diabetes in a developing country (Argentina). Methods. The third version of the Diabetes Attitudes Scale questionnaire was randomly and personally distributed and collected in different provinces among 252 HCTMs (physicians, nurses, nutritionists, social workers and podiatrists) and 279 people with type 1 and type 2 diabetes. We collected 531 out of the 542 distributed questionnaires. Data collected were statistically evaluated using ANOVA, covariance, Chi square and t-tests. Results. Despite we recorded little but significant differences in attitutes of HCTMs and people with diabetes, both groups manifested only a slight agreement (borderline to the neutral score level of 3) on items such as Seriousness of type 2 diabetes, Value of tight control and Psychosocial impact of diabetes, and they did not even agree on the importance of Patient autonomy (score below neutral level of 3). No significant differences were recorded between people with type 1 or type 2 diabetes, but people from both groups who had previously attended diabetes education courses obtained higher scores regarding Seriousness of the disease (P < 0.01). Conclusions. The unfavorable trend among the participants, similar to that recorded in developed countries, would contribute to the poor treatment outcomes observed in people with type 2 diabetes. Removal of these attitudes by means of education could contribute to improve the quality of care and of life of people with diabetes and to decrease the costs of the disease.
