Resumen:
Trimethyltin hydroxide (TMTOH) has proved to be a very efficient reagent for the saponification of non-hindered alkyl esters under mild conditions. Compared to classical saponification agents (LiOH, NaOH, K2CO3, Ba(OH)2, Cs2CO3, etc.), TMTOH is less prone to produce epimerization of sensitive carbons or degradation of base-sensitive functional groups. In fact, the appearance of this very convenient hydrolytic reagent has lead to a widespread use of methyl esters for the protection of carboxylic acids.
