Resumen:
Type 1 diabetes mellitus is a worldwide chronicand auto immune diseases affecting almost 25 million individualaround the world. Particularly, in Colombia, it has an annual rateof growth of 3% - 5%. Current research in the treatment of thisillness is aimed at the implementation of the so-called ArtificialPancreas, a device that allows the regulation of blood glucoselevels automatically. Recently, several model predictive controlstrategies has been developed to accomplish that. In this work, aperformance comparison between a standard model predictivecontrol (MPC) and a novel impulsive zone MPC scheme ismade based on a novel long-term glucose insulin model. Theproposed control strategies ensures the stability under moderateto-severe disturbances. A long-term scenario - including meals -are simulated and tested in 20 real patients. The results appear tobe satisfactory as long as every hyperglycemia and hypoglycemiaepisodes are suitably controlled. The performance comparisonalso shows that the standard MPC is 70% of the time in thetarget zone, while the iZMPC is 92:5%.
