Resumen:
The advanced oxidation processes (AOPs) are based on two main steps?the generation of free radicals and the oxidation reactions of the polluting molecules caused by these radicals. The hydroxyl radical is primarily responsible for the efficiency of the AOPs. Its high oxidation potential in fact guarantees a rapid degradation of the polluting molecules. In this study, laboratory experiments were conducted to compare the efficiency of using Peracetic Acid (PAA), PAA/UV-based advanced oxidation processes in water disinfection. The combined commercial PAA mixture + UV disinfection showed increased and even synergistic effects effectiveness.  Our results show that 4 mg L-1 of a commercial mixture of PAA + UV are enough to produce more than 4 logs decrease in bacteria concentration in less than 7s working under clear water conditions. The combination of the two methods provides a promising approach to disinfection processes
