Resumen:
This study focuses on the mineralization of Atrazine, which is a member of s-triazine group of herbicides. These pesticides have endocrine disrupting capabilities, being classified as a possible human carcinogen. Fenton and photo-Fenton process were explored as chemical pretreatment to improve the biodegradability of Atrazine. The experimental work was performed in a well stirred tank laboratory reactor irradiated from both sides with two tubular UV-lamps. The effects of H2O2 and Fe(III) initial concentrations on the mineralization processes under irradiated and non-irradiated conditions have been studied and the optimal conditions found. Results indicate that Fenton and photo-Fenton processes may be employed as an effective treatment for the degradation of Atrazine in water solution.
