Resumen:
Engine manufacturers are facing increasing market demands for augmenting the durability and strength of their products, while at the same time lowering the gases emissions to the environment and the fuel consumption. These requirements pose severe exigences on internal combustion engine valves. Several mechanical components have extended its life by improving the alloys and/or the heat treatment or the hard facing of materials. Nevertheless, in a context of low oil content, wear between valve and seat is a phenomenon that engineers have to take more and more into account in new designs. The use of simulation tools for contact and wear prediction, specifically the Finite Element Method (FEM), can help to design products for these stringent conditions.
