Resumen:
The increasing of worldwide biodiesel production from vegetable oils and animal fats brought with it an increase in the availability of glycerol, which is obtained as a by-product, and decreasing its price in the market, which gives rise the opportunity to generate added-value compounds and/or energetic ones from a residue of renewable source. In addition, glycerol allows to obtain a large number of products with industrial interest, being applicable the concept of biorefinery. This work presents the design, preparation, characterization, and evaluation of catalysts looking for them to be active and selective to transform glycerol into ethyleneglycol by hydrogenolysis in gas phase. Catalytic systems were prepared starting from different supports (Al2O3, 13X and ferrierite zeolites, SiO2 with different specific surfaces, colloidal silica, and a mass catalyst), using Ni(NO3)2 and Ni(acac)2 as precursor salts, incorporating promoters (Mg, K, and B), and adding surfactants (PVP, EDTA, and NH3OH). Reaction conditions evaluated were: 180-250 ° C, H2 0.8-1.5 mL/h, and glycerol solution 20-60% w/v, and pre-reduction temperature of 300 and 600 °C. Materials reaching the best catalytic performance were characterized by DRX, FTIR, TPR, BET, TEM, and TPO.
