The 3-D pore structure and surface acidity makes the zeolites useful catalysts and adsorbents for several applications in petroleum refining, petrochemicals production and Fine Chemistry1-3. The reduction of the crystallite size down to nanometric dimensions may cause a significant decrease of the molecular diffusion paths, while the external crystal surface area (S) and the surface-to-volume ratio (S/V) increase substantially with respect to conventional zeolite crystals (i.e., D ≈ 1000 nm)4 In this work nanocrystals of Y-6 and ZSM-55 Zeolites were synthesized. The formation of crystallites with a low dimensionality (20-40 nm diameter) was examined in function of the reaction time by XRD, FTIR with KBr, 27Aland 29Si NMR-MAS, while the particle size was measured by TEM and Rietveld´s method using Scherrer’s equation. Complementary information of critical parameters of the low dimensional crystals was obtained by HRTEM. The theoretical images of the Y- and ZSM-5 zeolites structure were calculated using the HRTEM module implemented in the Cerius2 interface8 and the results were compared with the experimental images using standard image processing methods (Digital Micrograph Program from Gatan Inc.). The physicochemical properties of the zeolitic nanocrystallites were compared with the conventional macroscopic crystals. These materials were ionexchanged with NH4NO3, and NH3 was removed by calcination (i.e., 550 oC) to obtain the solid acids, which were studied by FTIR with pyridine desorption, while the catalytic activity was tested via the cracking of 1,3,5-TIPBz.
