Resumen:
Nitrates are one of the most commonly found contaminants in surface and ground water, which has led to the study of different processes for the purification of contaminated water due to nitrates and nitrites, which are harmful to human health. In this work we study the method of catalytic reduction of nitrates using Pd-Sn bimetallic catalysts supported on an anion exchange resin. It was observed that no matter the Pd content, the Pd:Sn ratio 4: 1 maximizes the conversion . Those catalysts with Pd:Sn ratios 10: 1 and 40: 1 showed negligible activity, which can be attributed to decreasing concentration of bimetallic sites where the reduction of nitrates to nitrites occurs , and therefore this reaction step is conditioned and diminished. We also found that the higher the Pd concentration, the greater the nitrates conversion observed. With the Pd2 % -Sn0.5 % catalyst, 83.7 % conversion was obtained . As regards the selectivity to N2, those catalysts containing 1% Pd showed better selectivity, being more selective the one with Pd:Sn ratio 4: 1 , whereby a value of 92.95 % was obtained.
