Resumen:
The obtaining of EMF from HMF, product of the dehydration of hexoses coming from the hydrolysis of biomass, is evaluated as bio-additive of diesel. The HMF reacts in the presence of ethanol to give the ether. The reaction is catalyzed by acids. ZrO2 is a suitable material but with a low surface area. To increase the surface it is dispersed in a mesoporous zeolite MCM-22, which can provide shape selectivity. The supported catalysts are compared with two commercial cationic resins. The effect of the promotion of zirconia with sulphate to modify the B/L ratio is also evaluated. The catalysts are characterized by XRD, N2 desorption and thermo desorption of pyridine (Py) and collidine (TMPy) to determine the B/L ratio. The catalytic activity is analyzed in a batch reactor with HMF solutions (15%) in ethanol, at 140 °C and 7 bar, for 3 h. The incorporation of 25% ZrO2 to the zeolite, under the selected reaction conditions, increases the conversion of the support by 50% (37 to 56%) and improves the yield to EMF by 75% (26 to 46%). The cationic resins reach the total conversion but are only selective to EOP, by-product of reaction.
