Resumen:
Diesel vehicles are widely used due to their economy and efficiency but they emit two main pollutants, soot and NOx, for which no effective way of treatment has yet been found. The present work focuses on the deposition of the Co,Ba,K/ZrO2 catalyst onto both Al2O3 foam and cordierite monolith to be tested for soot combustion in the presence of NO and O2. The ZrO2 coating was added by washcoating – calcination cycles and the active components, Ba, Co, and K, by impregnation. The final catalytic coatings onto both substrates were characterized by XRD, SEM-EDS and FTIR. The soot particles were incorporated using soot suspensions in two different solvents: water and n-hexane. Using n-hexane as solvent, small soot aggregates and good intimate soot-catalyst contact was obtained. When soot was added to the Co,Ba,K/ZrO2/foam using a 600 ppm soot supension, the maximum combustion rate in the presence of 0,1% de NO was at ca. 370 ±10°C (very close to the value obtained testing the powder catalyst). No significant differences in activity were found when the soot was incorporated into the Co,Ba,K/ZrO2/monolith, although the impregnation of soot in this structure was not reproducible.
