In order to obtain more resistant nickel catalysts against coke deposition for the steam reforming of glycerin, the effect of the way of incorporating cobalt on lanthana-supported nickel catalysts on the properties of these solids was studied in this work. Samples were prepared by the coimpregnation or by successive impregnations of nickel and cobalt on lanthana. It was found that the all solids were made of lanthanum and nickel oxide ( LaNiO3) and/or lanthanum and cobalt oxide ( LaCoO3) and/or lanthana (La2O3). The monometallic nickel sample and the solid prepared by coimpregnation also contained nickel oxide while the monometallic cobalt catalyst and that obtained by successive impregnations also contained cobalt oxide (Co3O4). The catalyst prepared by successive impregnations showed the highest resistance against coke deposition, besides being stable in the reaction medium. It was also active and selective to hydrogen and was the least active to water gas shift reaction as compared to the other samples, producing a gaseous mixture with the highest H2/CO ratio.
