Resumen:
The contamination of water by nitrates is a serious problem affecting water availability for human consumption worldwide. Nitrates are not toxic by themselves, they acquire the capacity to act on the fetal hemoglobin and produce de blue-baby syndrome. Among other technologies, catalytic reduction appears as a promissory alternative to eliminate these species and selectively transform them into N2. In this work, bimetallic Pd and Pt catalysts supported on Al2O3 and SiO2 promoted with In concentrations between 1.5% and 0.25% were studied to test catalytic activity and selectivity for the reduction of nitrates to N2 in water. The results obtained indicate that the catalyst of Pd,In and Pd,In supported on Al2O3 showed the higher nitrate conversion and the highest PZC improve the better activity in this catalyst.
