Resumen:
Both 1-phenylethanol and 1-indanol are useful fine chemicals that are produced, in high yield, by reduction of ketones using toxic, corrosive and polluting complex metal halides such as NaBH4 and LiAlH4. In this sense, the liquid-phase hydrogenation of acetophenone and 1-indanone over Cu-based catalysts is proposed as an alternative. Two catalysts were used: a) Cu/SiO2 prepared by incipient wetness impregnation; b) Cu-Zn-Al prepared by coprecipitation. Cu/SiO2 contained large metal particles with low metal-support interaction. On the contrary, Cu-Zn-Al sample had small metal particles interacting strongly with the spinel phase and a higher capacity for H2 chemisorption.Over both catalysts, the liquid-phase hydrogenation of 1-indanone was faster than acetophenone, at 363 K, 10 bar and using cyclohexane as solvent. The time for total ketone conversion was lower with the Cu-Zn-Al than with Cu/SiO2. In the acetophenone hydrogenation, the alcohol was the only product over both catalysts. However, in the case of 1-indanone, indane was produced by hydrogenolysis of alcohol. Nevertheless, both catalysts were highly selective to the alcohol, showing yields between 85 and 97%.
