Resumen:
Dynamic laser speckle (DLS) is an opticaltechnique that has been used for several applications in biology, medicine andindustry. It is based on a scattering phenomenonoccurring when coherent laser light illuminates an active surface. The surfaceappears to be covered by tiny bright and dark dots that fluctuate in aseemingly random way as for a boiling liquid, according with the surfacefluctuation. Thus, the study of the temporary evolution of the speckle patternsmay provide an interesting tool to characterize the parameters involved in thesample dynamic processes. Many new applications have been recently developed. In this paper, we discuss a brief accountof the basic concepts of the (DLS) technique. Then, we show developments both withnew algorithms for characterization of the phenomenon as well as newapplications. We present algorithms as vortex and island analysis for lowdynamic speckles activity, studies of spatial-temporal patterns using principalcomponent analysis and image segmentation using Self-Organizing Maps. Also weuse dynamic speckle techniques applied to studies of chemotaxis towardshydrocarbons and maize hardness, for the characterization of electrotechnical-porcelain,hydro-adsorption processes in clay surfaces for catalysis applications and measurementsof shrinkage during photopolymerization of methacrylate resins used indentistry.Perspectives of future research such as epoxyadhesive, blood clotting, reading under paper and other applications will bepresented.
