In the year 2008, experts on compact objects from all around the world were invited to lecture on our current knowledge of these sources and their astrophysical manifestations in the nice environment of the classical buildings of La Plata Observatory, Argentina. The result was a very fruitful school attended by around 70 participants from 14 countries. The lectures were then transformed into chapters of a monographic book, that became the first of the new Book Series of the Argentine Astronomical Society.This book presents a comprehensive and self-contained description of compact objects and the related astrophysics, including white dwarfs, neutron stars, black holes, Active Galactic Nuclei, gamma-ray bursts, and microquasars. A detailed description of radiative processes is provided as well. The book will be of great interest for advanced graduate students and researchers in several areas of astronomy and astrophysics.
