Resumen:
Bisphenol A (BPA) is extensively used in the production of polycarbonate plastics and epoxy resins . Because of the wide usage of polycarbonate plastics and epoxy resins in industry and households, BPA become one of the most ubiquitous contaminants in the environment . It has been reported that BPA is an endocrine disruptor with strogenic activity ;slight or moderate toxicity to aquatic organisms has also been detected.  Therefore, increasing interest has been generated over its elimination in waste treatment systems. Biodegradation of BPA had been reported in waste water treatment plants, pure microbial cultures, and nitrifying activated sludge  However, the information about the acclimation process of the biomass to the presence of BPA as carbon source is scarce. Thus, the objective of the present work was to analyze the acclimation process of activated sludge to BPA as the sole carbon source in the absence and presence of ammonium. The obtained results suggest that the presence or absence of ammonium did not modify the acclimation of the biomass or the biodegradation of bisphenol A in the activated sludge system, and that the acclimation of the biomass requires a minimum of three consecutive batch assays. These findings will help to design a technological process for the biodegradation of Bisphenol A
