Resumen:
The prebiotic properties of oligosaccharydes and their relevance in medicine are addressed. A brief description of oligosaccharydes currently used as prebiotics, including the study of their prebiotic properties, the relevance in health as well as their synthesis and their potential use as cryoprotectants is presented. The most popular prebiotics are described in detail, toghether with their characterization, determination of their prebiotic index, etc. Finally, the newly reported properties of some prebiotics are also described.
