Resumen:
Dense 3 mol% yttria- partially stabilized zirconia (3Y-TSZ), and doped with 0.25 wt% Al2O3 (3Y-TSZA) were produced by slip casting and subsequently sintered at 1300- 1500 ºC. The 3Y-TSZ and 3Y-TSZA characterization by XRD, SEM-EDX, Hgporosimetry revealed that they exhibited dense and fine microstructures with some grain growth at 1500 ºC. The effect of acid treatment (H3PO4 acid at 90 oC for 3 days) on the tetragonal-monoclinic phase transformation, open pore volume, microstructure and biocompatibility of exposed zirconia surfaces were determined. In-vitro biological tests such as cell morphology and proliferation were performed with osteoblastic cell cultures. The biological studies confirmed the biocompatibility of 3Y-TSZ surface without acid treatment. A slightly lower cell proliferation on Al2O3 doped 3Y-TSZ compared with that on 3Y-TSZ was observed. The cell proliferation on the acid treated surface was affected by the presence of 0.25 wt% alumina.
