Resumen:
Studies have been carried out about the capacity for adsorption of aflatoxins (B1, B2, G1 and
G2) in contaminated corn feed by three clays classified as smectites, which had been modified
previously by acid activation treatment.
The mineralogical characterization of the clays was realized by DRX, FTIR, and MS. These
techniques were used also for monitoring structural changes in the minerals associated to the
activation treatment.
The evaluation of the adsortion of aflatoxins by the clays was performed by means of the
ELISA method; for this purpose we used a dose of 0.1% w/w clay/corn naturally contaminated with
80 ppb of aflatoxins. The results show that in some cases the modified samples have a higher
efficiency for adsorption than the natural untreated clays.
