Resumen:
Cu and Zn adsorption in montmorillonita and their Na exchange products and after mechanical (300sec) and thermal (350 and 500 °C) treatments were studied. These samples were characterized by specific surface area, XRD and porosity. The decrease of specific surface with the treatments doesn´t seem to impact the amount of metals adsorbed, indicating the constancy of surface sites to retain metal. This behaviour could be assigned to the increase of pores volume. The analysis of the interlayer space modification by metals adsorption, by the shift of the d(001) line, postulates the formation of internal sphere complex type, in higher amount for Cu that Zn in PJ and PJNa samples. While in the treated samples the Cu seems to form external sphere complex in collaboration with other surface sites (type specific aluminum oxide, for the Cu and pH dependent for the Zn).
