Resumen:
The purpose of this work is to develop a technique allowing designing artificial patinas of defined protectiveness against corrosion of the underlying structure. It was also applied to calibrate a new device for measuring “in situ” protectiveness of patina formed outdoor on copper base structures. Patinas of different protectiveness were developed in laboratory, which characterization was performed through electrochemical and surface analysis. Atomic force microscopy (AFM) and environmental scanning microscopy (ESEM) were applied on the artificially formed patinas on pure copper. They were analyzed in plan and cross section to correlate limiting dissolution current with thickness, the only independent variable to get patina samples of desired protectiveness. These laboratory results were also applied to quantify “in situ” previous protectiveness evaluations of patina formed on copper base monuments of the Cultural Heritage using the new portable device.
