Resumen:
The Kayapó are a group of South-Amerindians whose split from other indigenous of the Ge family occurred at the
end of XVI century, at the north of Ilha do Bananal, between Tocantins and Araguaia rivers. After this common
origin, successive events lead to the risen of several groups identifi ed as Kayapó. This particular trajectory, even partially
known, indicates that the Kayapó are an ideal group to test the existence (or not) of signals of occurrence of
the fi ssion-fusion phenomenon of villages propagation (Neel and Salzano, 1967; Am J Hum Genet 19:554-574).
